A SHAREHOLDER'S ANSWER TO A "CALL"
The secretary of a gold mine in India having sent an imperativo demand to a certain shareholder for the payment of a "call,'' received the following lvplv : — "Dear Sir,—l havo your letter of this day, and note that your directors propose to r.roceerl against me. Your prospectus stated that one of tho objects of your company was to "seek, win, and work sold iu India and elsewhere."—viz., out of me. I can assure you, that I am not an auriferous vein; the only lode I possess is a load of debt, and as a gold mine I shall bo a failure. Your prospectus estimated a yield of l-.iz. of trolu per ton ou 30,000 tons of quarts per annum—£lo,6oo storlinir per annum. You may "crush" me, but you will find that I shall not yield nearly so much. My person, (which, for the purpose of this calculation, may be considered quartz) weighs, roughly speaking, teu stone, and, if crushed immediately, I estimate that it would yield as follows: — Gold, nil ; silver, 3s ; copper, -U.—Total, Ss 4Ad. Deduct cost of crushing, say £0 si.—Yours faithfully,
