WAIKATO COUNTY COUNCIL
The usual monthly meeting of tho Waikato County Council was held at tho Council Chambers yesterday at 3 p.m. Present : Crs. Primrose (in the chair), Seddon, Biirugh, Johnson, and Forrest. Mr T. G. Sandes, County Engineer, was also in attendance. The minutes of the last meeting were read and continued, and the outward correspondence adopted. (ihavi'.i..—A ratepayer from near Huntly reported that the Taupiri Coal Company was taking gravel off a public road near the first bridge towaids Rangiriri, and carting the gravel for ballast, and thereby making the road dangerous. The clerk, on receipt of the letter, forwarded a copy of it to the engineer for him to report on the matter. Tho clerk was instructed to draw the attention of the compauy to the way in which they hare cut up the road, and suggesting that they give some assistance towards its repair.
Petition. —A petition was received from about a dozen ratepayers in tho Matahura district, praying that the Council will continue the road to Mangapiko from Matahura, as Mr Hill, through whose property the track formerly passed, had stopped the traffic, 'fhe most important part would be a bridge across the Matahura, which would c ist about £35.—Cr. Johnson stated that he had visited this place, and thought that to make tho road would cost about £180.—It was decided not to do anything in this matter at present, owing to the changes taking place in tho road lines in the district, and want of funds. Necessary Works.—Cr. Johnson reported that since the last meeting he had paid his usual visit round the district before tho winter set in, and he suggested that a man be put on for a couple of weeks on the road to Miranda, one on the road to the coal mines near Vincent's, and one on Storey's road in Matahura, and about 300 fascines put in to repair Ross' road.—The Chairman drew Cr. Johnson's attention to the large amount of money (about £150) which had been spent on small jobs in the Rangiriri riding during the last year, and said that something should be done to do these work in a more methodical manner. He thought that the best plan to givo satisfaction to tho Council was for the Engineer to inspect these works. —Cr. Johnson stated that he objected to the Engineer going to inspect these works.—lt was ultimately docided that matters bo hold over, pending the visit of the Engineer to the district. Furze. —The Engineer reported that no attention had been paid to the notices sent with reference to the clearing of tho furze. —Cr. Steele here took his seat. Lot 411'. —Mr Honeybun, who tendered for the lease of this lot at last meeting, at £15 per annum, forwarded an amended offer at £20 per annum. The chairman said tho expenditure on this reserve was now about £120, and the £20 was, ho thought good interest on tho expenditure, and ho moved that Mr Honeybun's offer for £20 be accepted. Seconded by Cr. Steelo aid carried. The clerk was instructed to have a lease drawn up. Rate. —Cr. Johnson gave notico to move at next meeting that a rate of . : t 'd in the £ be struck in the Rangiriri riding, and the Clerk was instructed to publish the necessary notices to this effect. This concluded tho business, and the Board rose.
