RAGLAN.

l'l'BLic Woi'.Ka.—Messrs Gilmour and Pegler's contract having bean accepted for the deviation of the Kauroa and Te Mata roads, they aro now engaged with a number of men on the work. The work on the Waipa road to Mr Cogwell's place, at Parawai, is being pushed on, heavy rocks in some places having to be removed. Mr Sandes, County Engineer, is expected over this week to examine the work. Never, at any time perhaps, was so much road work being gone on with as at the present time, and it is to be hoped that it will all be completed beforo the winter sets in. Messrs Vercoe aud Sutton's contract is nearly completed. The roadway over the stone culvert they have constructed has been open for traffic during tho last few weeks. Pile-driving at the new wharf is progressing, nearly a quarter of the piles having been driven. Mr Philips has been appointed to superintend the work. Local Steamer. —Our local trader put in an appearance during last week, aud the wharf waci thronged with visitors and residents when she arrived, She brought her usual inward cargo of .shopkeepers' and settlors' requirements, and took from here a large cargo of lla.\ and other produce. A considerable portion of thu flax shipped is, wo are pleased to noto, for tho Home market direct. Amongst the Home shippern aro tho old firm of Messrs Wallis, whu ha been producing the libra fur many years past. Visitoks.—Amongst our visitors hore are Professors Thomas aud Brown, of the Auckland University. Last week being the annual race meeting, our little township was thronged by a largo number of folks from all parts, and never, perhaps, for some year.- , , weru there so many people in Raglan. Tun WiiATHKU.—The glorious spell of fine weather we have enjoyed broko last Friday evening, since which time there have been severe gales with considerable fall of rain and cold weather, tt is Imped we shall soon be enjoying hue weather again. Maize standing from eight to ten feet high bun been levelled to the ground, and potato digging has been retarded. The Pea along tho coast presented a grand sight, being one mass of foam.
