Thb Channel Islands are gradually increasing their dutiss on imports. The Guernsey States have placed a tax of 8d a pound on tobacco, and Is a pound on cigars, and also 2d a gallon on English ales imported into the island. These have all hitherto been free from taxation. Thotaxon spirits was raised from Is Gd to 4s 2d per gallon. A Central News telegram from New York, dated Sunday, says the passenger steamer Bristol, plying on the Sound between New York and Newport, caught fire while alongside the wharf at Newport at a. late hour on Sunday night, and was almost entirely destroyed. Fortunately she had discharged most of her passengers, but a few remained on board, and they escaped with the greatest difficulty in their night clothes. The steamer Aloxicn, laden with tobacco and lianip, fs-;nn Havana, was partly destroyed by firs n New York harbour early.
