LAND SETTLEMENT.
[BY TELEGRAPH. — PRESS ASSOCIATION.] Wellington, Wednesday. Theue was a great rush for the Governinent sections thrown open this week. In all about 25,000 acres were offered in various parts of the province, of which sonio 13,000 were taken up. The, pick of the land was the Horowhenna Block of 370 acres on the Manawatu line, the only land which the Government had left between here and Manawatu. It is good alluvial soil and the position advantageous, consequently there was enormous competition. Of the (i 3 sections all but 15 were immediately applied for. Vour of these go in a day or two. For tile 48 sections there were no less than 470 applications. The other blocks were offered principally to ease the rush on the Horowhenua sections, and it was not expected they would be all taken up. The eagerness of the settlers to secure small holdings is considered a very healthy sißn.
