A BIG BANQUET.
It may interest some of our readers to learn what was consumed at the Lord Mayor of London's banquet on the 9th of November :—" The viands provided for the Lord Mayor's banquet included 700 quarts of turtle soup (thick and clear), two turbot (only supplied to a small portion of the guests), 100 turkeys, 250 fowls, 40 hams, 40 tongues, 200 cli3h.es of game (consisting of partridges, pheasants, and plovers), 40 game and pigeon pies, 12 quarters lamb, 10 sirloins and two baron of beef, the latter served cold, and cut by carvers on high stands in the Guild. In addition to these there were 200 diihes of jellies and cream, 300 dishes of meringues, French pasties, etc., 200 fruit tarts, and 350 ices. The dessert included 50 pine apples, 20 melons, 2501bs of grapes, 240 dishes of apples, pears, etc., and sundry other dishes. Nuts are avoided, as their cracking disturbs the oratory. The wine consumed amounted to about 60 dozen champagne, with a few dozen of sherry, hock, and claret, not above 20 dozen in all. The wine account, it is fair to say, covers several luncheons and diuners of the Lord Mayor and Slierriff's Committee, who have the direction of the arrangements. There were nearly SOO guests present, and a large number of servants dined outside the hall. In accordance with the usual custom, everything remaining was distributed among poor and deserving persons known to the members of the committee, and this year 130 families were made happy by the very substantial 'scraps' left on the Lord Mayor's table."
