THE NEW ZEALAND FLAX INDUSTRY.
[BY TI'XECJTtAVJJ, — I'RKSS ASSOCIATION.] Poxton, Monday. The meeting of hemp millers, held on Saturday night in the Temperance Hall, Foxton, convened by Mr K. Gardner, of Wellington, to consider the increase in freight made on hemp, was largely attended, and a unanimous resolution was passed condemning the shipping companies for charging i'fi 10s and five per oent per ton, when formerly only £4 10s was charged, Mr Gardner thought a reduction was bound to be obtainedi Mr Gale, of Johnstone and Co., was present, and stated that the ships on the Australian coasts would carry flax for 455, and it would cost 40s tn take it there. He felt sure that the companies would reduce the rate. Mr Gardner was appointed to try and arrange a reduction.
