NEWCASTLE ROAD BOARD.

Adjouknivt) ordinary meetinsr of the Newcastle Road Board held on Thursday. 2.lst February, I.SH'.I. at 2 p.m., at tho office of the Board. Present: Messrs Corboy (chairman), Rothwell, Corbett, and Bycroft. Minutes of last and adjourned meeting were read and continued, and the correspondence was read. Ranchi; at Whatawhata. —On consideration of the ratepayers' petition from Whatawhata and other parts of the district drawing the attention of the Board to the unwarrantable annoyance they were about to sutler through the appointment of a ranger by the Waipa County Council over tlie Whatawhata township flat with power to levy and collect fees from cattle owners for the right of running same on the road or in default the cattle to be impounded, further that they were not consulted beforehand as to the advisability or otherwise of having a ranger, and asking the Board to mediate on their behalf by urging on the Council to have tho appointment cancelled and avoid giving power to a rangor to levy black mail on the ratepayers, the Board agreed that the petitioners had a valid grievance against tho Council for the action they were taking in this matter, and if they persisted in enforcing tho ranger's appointment, the Ivard would be compelled in the interest of tho ratepayer* to appoint a ranger with authority to have all cattle impounded for which the county ranger might have received fees if found tresspassing or crnzing on district roads, or streets in the township of Whatawhata. The Board further resolved to direct th<> Clerk to write to tho Waipa County Council and convey the desire expressed in the petition of tho ratepayers as presented to the B .ard, and inform" tho Council that the Board agrees with tho prayer of the petition, viz., that the appointment of ranger if already made for this district bo cancelled, as they are fully satisfied the scheme if carried out would result in litigation, as a similar appointment made by a previous Bsard resulted. A few small accounts wore passsd when tho Board rose.
