DEATH OF AN AERONAUT.
American mail news to hand states that at Columbus, Ohio, B. F. Vandegrit, an aeronaut, ivi»t wilh his death from drowning under di.-tressing circumstances. He wns announced to make a balloon a>cenl from Exposition park, and to diop from his balloon by means _of a, parachute. The feat cost him his lite. Fifteen thousand people witnw-'d 1 1' : ' asivent, which was made in a hot. air balloon. \\ hen the aerostat had reached an altitude of about half a mile, to the horror of the spectators the balloon collapsed, and began to descend like a limp, wet rag. With great presence of mind, Vandegrit cut his parachute loose from the falling mass, and the parachute descended several hundred feet at groat speed. It then gradually opened, hat was carried by the wind over tho Chatahooched river, and tho aeronaut, fell into the turbulent stream and was drowned. JIo was a young mau 25 years of age, and commenced the parachute experiments in August last, since which time he had made 40 successful descents.
