Te Kooti, the instigator of the Poverty Hay massacre, was in town to-d.iy, although the; fact was known to vei-y few, lie having arrived here by the \Vaikato train last melit, and put up at tho Waverley Hotel. He is accompanied by his wife and another influential native named Taiaruru. Te Kooti has come to Auckland at the urgent request of Mr Mitcholsnn, Native .Minister, m reference to some dispute in which the notable native is concerned, and this forenoon he had a lone korero with both Sir H. Atkinson and Mr Mitchelsoii. The subject discussed was not disclosed, but it is understood to have an intimate relation to a desire possessed bv Te Kooti to re-visit Poverty Bay. That possibility is regarded with a dread of seiions consequences, as the feeling of intense hatred felt towards the old savage continues to linger in the breasts of the older inhabitants. During the day Te Kooti and his companions wore occupied in loafing about the town, and rubbed nose-: with .some natives whom he met, and shook hands with some others, but did not condescend to talk about his own aliairs. He is expected to return to Wai kato to-morrow, after having had sinothe-
interview with the Premier and Native Minister. This aft'.rnoon Mr Mitchslson proceeded to Remuura, where he is to enquire into a nativo reserve belonging to Tawhiao, about which there is some dispute. Cantaiu Alex. Robertson, of the lirigantine Anthony, was found drowned in the harbour to-day. lie had evidently nrssad his footing while attempting to step on board his vessel, and failing between the vessel and wharf had been drowned unseen, and without any chance of rescue. The General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church meets in Auckland on Toesday next and the Senate of the New Z *alaiid University masts hero on the 27th inst. After considering a circular from the Dunedin L nitre the 15 lard of General P irposesof the District Grand Lodge of Auckland I'l.C. unanimou-dy passed a resolution discouraging the formation of a United Grand Lodge for Now Zealand.
