Annual Meeting.
The anuua] meeting of tho congregation ofS. Andrew's Church, Cambridge, \vasheld in the schoolroom on Wednesday evening, tha Archdeacon presiding. Tho balance sheet for the past year and the report of the vestry weioread and adopted. The balance sheet showed the receipts to be as follows—To subscriptions, £73 13s; seat rents, i'SO -Is ; offertories, £180 -Is 6d ; rent, &c., £0 os ; social gathering, £17 Ss ; special donation, £3; choir account, £10 10s -Id; treasurer, (id ; overdraft, 3lst December, 1888, £47 17s Sd. Total receipts., £374 9s. Expenditure. Overdraft, 31st Dcceinlwr, 1888. £40 3s 0d ; salaties: Kev W l lis, £220 ; organist, £15; verger, £10 14s bd ; blower, £1 9s; gardener, 20 Is fid ; choirmaster, fee., £10 7s (id : Melanesnin Mission, £2 4s 2d ; Howe Mission, 0-j Jd ; synod expenses, £5 10s ; repairs to property, £L 10s 2d ; insurance, £19 4s 9d ; social gathering, £-1 X s oil ; inters jt, £1 9s 9u : lighting, £0 10s 4d ; sundries, £10 os oJ. Total expenditure, £374 9s. The report began by saying that the Church ill Cambridge had again cause to thank God for the past year, though it had suffered from the depression and loss of population. l)r. Hooper's arrival in the district and voluntary had been a greftt gain to the* Church and in extending the services generally. The Incumbent had, therefore, beau enabled to increase hi.--ministrations in tho out-districts. Refeience was made to the warm interest shown at Tamahore in tho necessities of the Church there, and the efforts made by the congregation to wipe off its indebtedness. The Sunday-school was still improving, and the Incumbent regretted he was unable to givo it his personal attention. Tho improvement m j tlio choir, under Mr 0. Garland's manage- j ment, was specially mentioned, as also the kind assistance givan by members of tho congregation at the Literary evenings, bv means of lectures, etc., in aid of parochial objects. Tho average attendance was, morning service 102, evening 7-1 baptisms during the year were 23, marriages 4, and burials 15. The liabilities had mcrea-ed by £20, being interest due on loan, and, irrespective of £270 of building loan, now stood at £144. As the revenue was still falling, and expenditure largely in excess of in come, the vestry had decided to go back to primitive usage—gratituitous services, lhe Incumbent's salary has been further lednce.l by £25. The salaries of organist and choirmaster have been abolished,, and the cleaning of the church is to be performed by volunteers. In order to raise funds to pay off the £114, another Garden .bete in Major Wilson's grounds has been resolved upon, the ladies entering on tha project with a will. . Votes of Thanks —On the motion of Dr. Moon, seconded by Mr Wells', aspecial vote of thanks w.is accorded Dr. Hooper for the great amount of work ho had done during the past year. Votes of thanks were also passed to the lay readers, SundaySchool teachers, choir, ringers, wardens, vestry and auditors ; also to tho schoolroom lecturers. Stipend. — The contribution to the stipend fund for the year 1889 was lixed at £ 195. . Wardens.—Mr Well* was appointed Minister's Warden and Dr. Moon was unanimously chosen to represent the people. Vestry.—Tlio number of the vestry was fixed at 10, tho following gentlemen being elected by ballot: Messrs Stewart, Hewitt, Dyer, Young, Gleuny, Brunskill, Hicks, Garland, Ward and Chitty. Auditors.—Messrs Merrick and Armer«haw were appointed auditors. Garden Fete.—A resolution supporting the garden fete to be held on February 19th was passed, and the meeting closed with tho singing of tho Doxology.
