Tha New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency ropwrt uu'ler data December 21st 1888:—Butter— (tity Id per lh). — Reporting on this market at the present moment for the future guidance of intending shippers in New Zealand is an extremely dimcult matter, the prospects of this market after tho New Year being next to impossible to forecast with any degree of accuracy as yet. Owing to tho Christinas demand, prices bavo been fairly well maintained during the pnsi. week or ten days, beat imported separator commanding up to Is 3d, prime Now Zealand dairy-made ruling a penny under this figure. Importations, however, havo been on a greatly increased «3nleoflatp. Cheese (duty 2d per Jb.)— Locally made cheese still continues to bo rushed on the market in largo quantities, Wheat.—Transactions arc very limited, holders not being disposed to come down to prices which would induce millers to purchase. Prime New Zealand therefore cannot bo quoted at over 5s per bushel for actual transactions. Oats (free.) —Have in sympathy with maize also suffered a considerable decline in values. Potatoes (free).—Famine priujs are at the moment asked, the supplies to hand being quite inadequate to the demand, and within the last few days as much as £13 has been demanded and obtained for goncl now local potatoes. Large arrivals, however, would at once cause the market to collapse.
