LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS.

(BY TELEGRAPH—OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Auckland, Monday. Tub principal master tailors have adopted a system of closing on Saturday afternoons. Constable Maroney, of Makotu, committed suicide by shooting himself with a revolver. He had been suffering from melancholia. Crowds of tourists are leaving for the Hot Lakes by both routes. Admiral Fairfax has decided that he will stay here for at least three weeks, may be a month, and then proceed to Wellington on a flying visit, returning after about three weeks absence to Auckland for the waters of the Waitemata are this summer to be the rendezvous of the Squadron. Auckland is exceptionally busy to-day, notwithstanding the depression and trade is unusually brisk, oven for Christmas. A petition is being signed to the Mayor and Council, praying for a modification of the bye-law under which the recent Salvationist conviction was obtained. The petitioners allege that it is very undesirable that the liberty of the people should be left entirely at the mercy of the police, and pray that complaints may be laid by the Council officials. Five warships are now in the harbour, and will stay two or three weeks. The Orlando is to be docked. The Royalist and Calliope are expectcd shortly. In reference to the South Auckland Racing Club's meeting, to be held at Olaudelands on Saturday next, although the Admiral was unfortunate in being unable to attend last year's meeting, several of his officers went up and were surprised at the good sport afforded them. They enjoyed the pleasant trip into the country, and generally reported so favourably that, as it will be seen, the Admiral was determined to arrange to rendezvous the squadron at Auckland at such a time as would enable him to bo present this year. Fortunately the club had anticipated the arrival of the squadron, and the invitation from the stewards was awaiting Admiral Fairfax at Government. House.
