A petition is being signed to the Mayor and Council, praying for a modification of the bye-law under which the recent Salvationist conviction was obtained. Five warships are now in the harbour, and will stay two or three weeks. The Orlando is to be docked. The Royalist and Calliope are expectcd shortly. In reference to the South Auckland Racing Club's meeting, to be held at Olaudelands on Saturday next, although the Admiral was unfortunate in being unable to attend last year's meeting, several of his officers went up and were surprised at the good sport afforded them. They enjoyed the pleasant trip into the country, and generally reported so favourably that, as it will be seen, the Admiral was determined to arrange to rendezvous the squadron at Auckland at such a time as would enable him to bo present this year. Fortunately the club had anticipated the arrival of the squadron, and the invitation from the stewards was awaiting Admiral Fairfax at Government. House.
