Tjh: M;itive Lund Court, under Mtiir, which lias boon for several months past adjudicating on the lands of the Rohe Potae, more commonly called The King Country, has got through a very
amount of work. In another u:ih;ii)ii of tin's issue wo publish a list of subdivisions which have been made up to the present flute and for which orders for certificates of titli! have been made by the Court. The King Country occupies a large portion of the interior of the North Island, extending on the north from the Firongia Range and the old confiscated line of the Pnniu, a tributary of the Waipa, to the headwaters of tho Wanganui, including Kawhia and Taranaki, on the south ; and from tlis West Coast to Lake Taupoon the eastern boundary. Ihe wliole area of this territory is shown on the Survey map to exceed one million six hundred thousand acres, and contains an estimated Maori population of between four and five thousand, of whom the superior tribe is the Ngatiinaniapoto. Of this large stretch of virgin country as much as three-quarters of a million acres, sub-divided into sixtylive separate blocks, have been passed through the Land Court since April last. All the laud represented by these sub-divisions lie on the northern part of the Rohc Potae, much of it being of good average quality, and suitable for settling upon it a numerous farming and pastoral population. The Main Trunk line of railway runs through most of these blocks, all'ording facilities for
settlement on a large scale when the policy of the Government is expanded enough to encourage an influx of the right class of people to enter upon its occupation. Until, however, the blocks have, been surveyed, and the land has been acquired by the Crown, the railway will be practically useless and unprofitable, and settlement by Europeans will be an impossibility.
