THE TYPHOON IN JAPAN.

News received from Japan by the lent mail, under date of September 12th, gives details of the severe and disastrous typhoon in the neighbourhood of Hiogo (Kobe) and Osaka, the eommerciiil capital of tho country. Iu the Tokuehima and Wakayama districts the loss of life and damage to property was very great. The official returns have not yet been fully completed, but so far as they go it appears that 2G7 parsons wero killed, chiefly by falling houses, and 227 injured. Of houses blown down and utterly destroyed the uumber is estimated at G,288, while 3,378 suffered inoro or less damage. On the two rivers, tho Aji-Kawa and the Kizu-gawa, running through Osaka, no fewer than ono thousand junks and sailing schooners are stated to fcave dragged their anchors during; the height of the storm. Eight hundied and fifty six vessels were lost off the coast, arid some 500 were wrecked. All these vessels wore native built and owned. In Yokohama little darnago was done at i-on, (hough houses suffered somewhat. Vessels iu the bay, however, prepared for the worst, and rode with two anchors down and steam up. Reports were still coming in of a second hurricane dawn the coast, and few vessels had ventured to leave port. Vessels coming in reported fearful weather outsido, with blindiug rain. The latter had been general .over tho whole of tho country, and the dumngo done to the cotton und rice crops was very serious.
