DEFEAT OF OSMAN DIGNA.

THE REBELS UTTERLY DEVEA.TED. ONE THOUSAND REBELS KILLED. (By Electric Teleohaph—Copyright.) Suakim, December 20. Ax engagement between the British forces and the rebels under O.sman Digna, which has been impending some diiystook place to-day. At an early hour this morning', Major-Goui-ral Grenfell at the head of four thousand men left the garrison, and stormed the rebels redoubts. The battle commenced at 7 o'clock, and lasted half an hour, the enemy being completely defeated, and leaving over a thousand killed upon the field. The Soudanese and black troops gallantly stormed the Arab trenches, despite a strong resistance by Osman's forces.

The Welsh Borderers followed up the attack on the trenches, and inHicted severe punishment on the enemy by volley firing.

The blue jackets from the British men-o'-war in the harbour also rendered valuable assistance with machine and heavy guns. Osman's defeat was complete, his ranks scattering and fleeing in the direction of Hasheet Tamai. The British loss was slight, no English officers being killed ' 'or even wounded. Major - General Grenfull's force now occupy the field and will encamp among the rebel works to-night.
