THE SHANNON APPOINTMENT.
(by TELEGRAPH—ntESS ASSOCIATION.) Dunedin, Monday. The Premier is overrun with deputations. He informed one that he was not responsible for the instructions issued, the responsibility resting with the permanent officers of tho Departments, though opinions, expressed by tho deputation, seemed to indicate that they believed Mr Shannon to have been appointed Commissioner of Customs, which was absurd. His recommendations were simply considered as those of an expert, but the responsibility rested on others. No contradictory instructions were issued. The statements telegraphed to the newspapers were unreliable, and certainly were not material for gentlemen occupying responsible positions to found charges upon. As to Mr Shannon's appointment he could not entertain the vague general statements alleged that the appointee was unsuitable. So far the Government has had every reason to be satistied with Mr Shannon.
