Titn Age to-day asserts that depression in general business has reached an acute stage, amounting in some departments of trade to absolute paralysis of operations. The Cabinet has decided to ask Parliament for a new loan for public works in addition to the two millions already authorised, which will be floated shortly. Two men named Driscoll and Dee, crossing Lake Wendouree in a boat yesterday, had words. Driscoll fatally struck Dee on the head. Driscoll has been arretted. Sydney, December 11. During yesterday's storm a Chinaman was struck by lightning at Eurith and killed. Brisbane, December 11. A man named Watson was struck by lightning at Win ton yesterday and killed. The final heat of the aqnatic tournament was rowed to-day, and resulted as follows: — -earle, ] ; Kemp, 2; Matterson, 3. Beach did not row, in accordance with his announced intention. Searle won by eight lengths, Matterson a bad third. Timo, ISmin. 39Jsecs. Matterson has challenged Beach to row hiin for £500 a-side.
