fe BEYOND. Never u word is said But it trembles in the air, And the truant voice has sped To vibrate everywhere; And perhaps far off in the eternal years The echo may ring upon our ears. Never are kind acts done To wipe the weeping eyes, But, like flashes of the sun, They signal to tho skies ; And up above the angels read How we have helped the sorer need. Never a day is given But it tend 9 the after yearn, And it carries up to Heaven Its sunshine and its tears ; While the to-morrow's stand and wait, The silent unites by the outer gate. There is no end to the sky, And the stars are everywhere, And time is eternity, And the here is over there ; For the common deeds of the common day Are ringing bells in the far away. Henry Burton. THE NIGHT BEFORE THE MOWING. All shimmering in tho morning shine And diamonded with dew. And quivering in the scented wind That thrills its green heart through— Tho little field, the smiling field, With all its flowers a-blowing, How happy looks tho golden field The day before tho mowing ! Outspread 'neath the departing light, Twilight, still void of star.*, Save where, low westering Venus hides From the red eye of Mars ; How quiet lies the silent field With all its beauties glowing ; Just stirring—like a child asleep— The night before the mowing. Sharp steel, inevitable hand, Cut keen, cut kind ! Our field We know full well must be laid low Before its wealth it yield ; Labour and mirth and plenty blest Its blameless death bestowing ; And yet wo weep, and yet we weep, The night before the mowing. Mhs Craik.
