Mil Gladsto.vk, speaking on the Government proposal for an extension of Lord Ashburn's Act. said arrears of rents was primarily entitled to attention. Mr Goschen said the Opposition had rejected the Government overtures for a temporary extension of the Act mentioned. The Government did not consider they were pledged to deal with the land purchase question, and were quite satisfied with an extension of Lord Ashburn's Act. (Statistics showed that evictions in Ireland were largely the result of the Plan of Campaign. The President of the National League, in America has appealed to Irish residents for subscriptions in aid of the Parnell Defence Fund. In the House of Commons, Mr Gladstone, in moving an amendment objecting to the withdrawal of the Irish land purchase question which had been before Parliament for several years, said the Government ought to have asked for an advance until March next, which the Opposition would have readily granted.
