The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE. Equal and exact justice to all men, Of whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political. THURSDAY, NOV. 22, 1888.
« There is no doubt the heavy depression which has clung to us so tenaciously for many years ia relaxing its hold and dropping away. At the same time, whilst conscious that the feeling throughout the Waikato is growing much more hopeful, wo would like to see a far more confident tone and more enterprising spirit than has yet been shown in this part of the colony. We said the other day that the present Government were singularly favoured with opportunities, many of which they are sow to take advantage of, particularly in regard to the existing disposition on thti part of a large section of the people to take up Crown lands, the return of many who lately left New Zealand for Australia, and the movement in the Old Country, all of which afford splendid opportunities for giving an active stimulus to the bona Me settlement of the country on a national scale. These opportunities invite the Government to adopt and pursue a popular and liberal policy. Now, unforseen circumstances have arisen in Australia which will afford the inhabitants of New Zealand, extraordinary opportunities for increased activity in the production of articles for export. We have already acknowledged the influences which the improved markets in England for our leading staples have upon us by giving us a brighter outlook for our wool, grain, frozen meat, dairy procluctsiLetc.
In addition to this, JjSjflfave's freaks at this moment are inflicting disasters upon others which will, however, be of great advantage to
us. Such will be the effect of the terrible drought in the Australian colonies. Everyone in this colony will deplore, and sympathise with our neighbours, in their severe misfortunes, over which none of us can exercise any control, for in such cases tin; wisdom and power of man is impotent. The distresses of the Australians bring more strikingly to our minds the immunity New Zealand enjoys from such evils, and should render us all the more thankful for our fertile soil, numerous rivers, ample rainfall and abundant harvests ; and also that we can share the fruits these blessings yield us with our kindred whose country is so severely visited. No human foresight could have foretold that such an opportunity as a blasting drought in Australia, ruining its crops and destroying sheep and cattle in numbers, would have arisen to stimulate the farmers ot New Zealand to largely increase the cultivation of agricultural product; in order <;o moot the demands that must ensue across the ar.aler in consequence of this visitation. The advices we obtain continually and publish '-;.s to the stale of the crops and markets in Australia indicate ihat cereals will ruio very high, and that for such products as potatoes, onions, hay, chaff, bran, &c, there will be very profitable openings for tho producers of this colony. The scarcity in the neighbouring colonies and the improved markets in England should fill our farmers with much greater confidence and inducetiieni to doubletheir exertions in the cultivation of their lands. The export of all our pastops,} and agricultural products, for some time to come at least, give promise of unexampled expansion, will give a healthy elasticity to trade and cpm-
meree in every direction that will undoubtedly make our burdens sit lightly uprill us.
