CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the above Council was held on Tuesday at G. 45 p.m. Present: His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Webber, Young, Clements, Ferguson and Bach. The only business was the confirming of the resolution of October lGth re Section 4 of the Rating Act A mendment Act 1888, which having been done, the ordinary monthly meeting was proceeded with, the above councillors being present and also Cr. Richardson.

The minutes of the previous meeting were confirmed, and the outward correspondence was approved. Uravel Contract.— A letter was received from Messrs Fogerty, Dillon and Co. the contractors for carting gravel, objecting to cait for ratepayers at 13 per load. The Clerk was instructed to let them know that thoy could demand payment beforehand. Fire Engine.—The Town Clerk of Invercargill wrote offering a steam fire-engine for sale. —Received. Woiiks Committee Report.—This committee recommended that the footpath on the Hamilton road be not formed at present, as the expense would be great to make a permanent job of it; two sumphs to carry off the surplus water, and a portion of the ground levelled, which could be done by the surfaceman, was all that was considered necessary. A sumph and culvert should be erected in Clare-street, near Mr Dodd's property, Mr Dodd having agreed to make the culvert free of cost, provided the material is supplied to him. They also recommended that the unnamed street from Clare-street to William.street be cleared at an expense not exceeding £I.—lt was resolved "That in the present state of the funds, No. 1 Hall-street contract be not proceeded with," and " That the matter of the unnamed street stand over for the present year." The balance of report was adopted. Finance Report.—Overdraft on October 9th, £GlO 14s 9d. Accounts paid during month, £40 7s 3d ; amounts lodged during month, £44 f>s 2d ; present overdraft, £006 lGs lOd. Hospital and Charitable Aid cheque not presented, and accounts to pass £G2 4s Sd ; leaving overdraft when accounts are paid, £GG9 Is Gd. Cahnacuan's Corner.—Mr David Carnnachan wrote claiming £110 damages, through the inattention of the Council to the streets on which his property abutted. The legal committee reported against the claim, and the Council declined to entertain it.

Furze Committee.—This committee submitted the names of those who had nut cleared the streets in front of their property ; the Borough Council being among the number. It was resolved that tha Council remove the gorse in front of their property, and that then seven days notice be given to the other defaulters, and on their failing to remove the gorse, they be at once prosecuted. A Safe for the Office.—lt was resolved to advertise for a second hand safe to be placed in the borough offices. Valuer.—Mr J, P. Thomson was appointed valuer for the borough at the same remuneration as formerly, viz., £1010s. A Probable Surcharge.— The following letter was received from the Audit Office, Wellington :—" Before disallowing a .sum appearing in the September account of the Cambridge Borough as having been expended in law costs in resisting a claim for a payment imposed on the Borough by Parliament, I shall be obliged if you will inform me upon what clause Corporations Act or other Council relied as justifying such expenditure of Borough funds.—l am, etc., J. K. Fitzgerald, Auditor-General."—lt was resolved that the Finance and Legal Committee answer the letter..

Accounts. —The following accounts were passed for payment :—H, Preece, £7 10s: Government Printer, £1 j T. Wells, 5a 4d ; J. Meredith, 14s 3d ; W. White, £14 0a 3d. —Cr. Priestly drew attention to the dangerous state of the road leading to the Karapiro Bridge. The matter was referred to the Works Committee to report upon, as was also the sloping of the gravel pit near Major Wilson's. This was all the business,
