RAILWAY CHARGES.
TO TUB EDITOR Sir,—Your correspondent "Sufferer" writes comnlaining of having to pay 7A per cent, freight on the invoice price- of goods, but that is mild indeed compared to this. Drain pipes value £17 were charged freight from Auckland £4 lis or 20.75 per cent, on cost price (the quantity was well over the minimum). Kauri timber from Auckland value £28 was charged freight and haulage £S (is Sd or 21).73 per cent: on cost prico (this quantitity also paid for as 400 feet minimum). Two tons of Newcastle coal from Auckland value £2 12s were charged freight £2 % (this quantity is under the minimum of 4 tons) or 02.2 per cent, on the invoice price. Look at that and weep ! Is it any marvel that the country tradesman cannot compete with those in the towns?— I am &c.
