FATAL ACCIDENT.
An old Waikato resident named Dixon, commonly known as Sir Willoughby Dixon, was drowned in the Pnniu at Anderson's crossing, on Friday, Oth inst, It appears ho liii'i cotr.e from Paterangi-where he has lived for mire than twenty years—to celebrate the Prince of Wales' birthday. On his way hack fiom here he turned up the ro.id past Mr Bryant's farm, ami following it got down to the Pnniu where, in attempting to ford it, he was drowned. As there was no one near it is not known whether his horse fell or got, into deep water, perhaps the latter, as the ford is a very dangerous one for anyone, unacquainted with it. He was seen going down the road, and sometime afterwards tho horse came back from tlu river without the rider. When the hoise was taken into Kihikihi it was recognised as Dixon's, and a search party went out, when tho body was found cansrlit in an eol weir, a few chains below theford. An inquest was held on Saturday, when i verdict of accidental death war returned. Deceased was very much intoxicated, which accounts for his having missed his road. He left hare with the intention of returning home to P.iterangi, but did not seem to know where he was going.
