FLOODS IN THE SOUTH.
(BY TKLKGRAPII.— I'KKSS ASSOCIATION.) Palmkuston. North, Monday. This fiercest gale of wind and rain ever experienced in this district occurred here on Saturday. Tho outlying districts were flooded fora considerable area, but the only serious damage reported is the loss .if 500 sheep by Mr "Russell. The railway line at Jockeytown was washed aw.iy. and is still underwater. The Manawatu River is in high Hood, and is overflowing the adjacent properties. Woodvillb, Monday. On Saturday -115 inches of rain fell, and the streams 'in the district are in "high floods. The Mamiwatu river rose yesterday to a height of 43"t. at the (.-Jorge. Lowlyi'ng lands are covered with water, but little damage is reported. Mastbhtox, Monday. A. heavy flood occurred at Masterton and surrounding districts. The railway lino North of Kopuranga is blocked, but the conches meet the train and convey mails and passengers north. Napieu, Monday. The weather moderated mi Saturday night. The rivers are flooded, but not much damage is reported. Newly shorn sheep died in large numbers. I 1 rnin 1 orangahau it is leported that a man named Thomas Steward was seen trying to cross the river and was carried down. He was unable to swim, and there is little hope of his safety. Wellington, Monday. The heavy rain on Saturday and yesterday caused a heavy landslip on the Welling-ton-Manawfttu railway line, several hundred tons of stuff came down, and the engine which was passing on its way to bring men to repair another section of the line "was buried, the driver and stoker caping with slight, bruises. Waipawa, Monday.
A cold heavy rain has continued here since Friday last. The rivers aro much flooded, and one pier of the new bridge at Waipukurau has been swept away.
