LATEST AUCKLAND NEWS.

(by telegraph—own correspondent.) Auckland, AVednesday. Thirty thousand applications have been received for the twenty-fivo thousand new shares offered in the colonies by the Bank of New Zealand. Mr Hean, Inspector of the National Bank, arrived from Australia to-day, much improved in health by the trip. The Wairarapa, which arrived in port this morning, brought amongst other passengers Detective Tuohey, who had in his custody a man named Juseph Young. This person was apprehended in Australia, and the detective was sent over to bring him back again. Young appeared at the Police Court this morning, when he was charged with having, on the 19th September, at Auckland, obtained goods and money to the value of £42 from James Howden, by means of certain false pretences, and with intent to defraud. An impudent case of burglary is reported from Poiißonby. The house of Mr J. H. Wilkins was entered during the afternoon, in the absence of Mrs Wilkins, and some money stolen. A young woman, named Mary Lovett, was arrested before 1 o'clock this morning on the Queen-street wharf, on a charge of smuggling goods ashore from the steamer Taiynan. She was found to be carrying 25 yards of silk. Alex. McArthur, an engineer on the steamer, states he had promised to give her the silk, but she took it ashore without his permission. She was charged at the R.M. Court with larceny and breach of the Customs Act, and, on the latter charge, was lined 25s— the value of the silk—and Gs 3d duty and costs. Alex. McArthur, the engineer, was fined £3 15s for dealing in uncustomed goods, and ordered to pay (is 3d duty and costs. MrArthur withdrew the charge of larceny preferred against the woman.
