CRICKET.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —At the annual meeting of the Paterangi Cricket Club, and in fact, up till a few weeks ago, it was thought the club would not be strong enough to compete for the cup matches, but I am happy to state that there are about forty playing members to pick from, who are all in good playing trim. I should fancy this team will take the Association Cup easily, as they have another bowler (Mr S. D. Hich-dale) whom I have no doubt will scatter the wickets quicker than either Messrs Crookes or Case, whose bowling I see is stated in your last Saturday's issue as "unplayable.", At the match they played with Mangapiko Club on Saturday, 20th inst., Mr Crookes' usual entertaining manner added greatly to the interest of the game, and the visiting team took their defeat in good part. I am sorry Mr Crookes did not make a longer stand against their bowling, which, on the whole, was very weak ; and again Mr Case, whom I see has got credit for eleven runs, six of which he did not make. At a scratch match held immediately after the Paterangi Club's ex.captain made an excellent stand | for sixty-three runs off Mr Cases' "unplayable " bowling, and carried his bat. I may state that the Mangapiko Cricket Club members never handled a bat or ball before this season, and they had to borrow some ■4lpvanc|ra and Te Awamutu school boys, only having f«i(r pf their own on the ground.—l am, etc., A Cricketer. Paterangi, 30th October 1888.
