Tun Paukks' li'l'h.n'ack, &(!.—The l'arlce-*' furnace has now Linen working for' several days, and is running smoothly without :i hitch. Mr Paikes is now treating ore. from the Kenilworth mine, and excellent results are anticipated. Mr Warden Noithcroft was present at the starting of the plant. Another plant which has now been closed down for over a year is about to recommence. This is the New Quartz Reduction Works, better known as Kailey's at Karangahake. It has been taken over by the Glasgow Syndicate, who has bought the Crown mine at Karangahake, and the whole property will be worked together. Mr George Norman McGruer, who lias controlled the Crown for about four years, assumes full management. About 1200 tons of ore, ranging , in value from £3 to £25 is ready for treatment. The reef in the Adeline is looking well, and generally things are looking healthierat Karangahake. At Owharoa the Farmers Brothers are getting first-class dirt in the Smile tribute. At Waitekauri Mr Ralph placed a staff of men on in the Maripnsa. It is said that a 1000 feet tunnel is to be driven through the ground.

Marototo Fizzle.—The Marototo fiasco is fizzling out. About a dozen claims here were forfeited yesterday by Warden N«rthtrnft. Not a dozen men are now on the Held, although it by no means follows that the field is barren. Miners have ere this deserted districts for years, which have afterwards been rushed to a good purpose. It will be a long time however, before oiitidence is restored in Marototo.

Max Rinklk Entbktaixmiot.—Measrs Max Rinkle and W. i. England gave a first class entertainment en Tuesday evening last, nt Paerciii, which was fairly attended. Nakrow Kscape.— The Paeroa school teachers' residence had a narrow escape (if being burned last Tuesday night, home light clothing hanping on a door swung or blew over a lighted candle, which was standing on a chair close '<y. In a minute or two these caught light and communion ted the fire to the bed furniture rapidly tilling the room with flames. Two of the teachers who lived in the house siieedily extinguished the flames, and only about £15 worth of damage was done.
