Oram Shepherd, manager of the City Hotel, was charged at the police court, to-day with the larceny as bailee of a promissory note for £90. Mr Martin, for the prosecution, said that the amonnt of the note had been paid, and the prosecution were willing to withdraw the charges. The beuch declined to agree, and remanded the case for a week; on allowing bail. BLENHEIM, Friday. Information is just to hand of a dastardly attempt to burn Vernon House, the property of the Hon. Mr Clifford. The incendiary was seen by a jockey who attempted to seize him, but was stunned by the man who made off. It is believed the same man has caused the late fire in Blenheim. The newa created excitement in town. MASTERTQN, Friday. This morning a three-year-old daughter of Mr George Ward, painter, of Masterton, was knocked down by a; runaway horse and cart and killed instantaneously. WESTPORT, Friday. , At the District Court, George Mears was found guilty of indecent assault, and sentenced to two years' imprisonment with hard labour. The Harbour Board has pissed a resolution to borrow £100,000. DUNEDIN, Friday. A house belonging to Mr McLean, of Mussellborough, was burned down last night. It was insured in the Standard Office for £100. A house at Bannockburn, owned and occupied by Mr Parsons, has been destroyed by fire. The insurance was £150 in the Union Office.
