Oram Shepherd, manager of the City Hotel, was charged at the police court, to-day with the larceny as bailee of a promissory note for £90. The beuch declined to agree, and remanded the case for a week; on allowing bail. BLENHEIM, Friday. Information is just to hand of a dastardly attempt to burn Vernon House, the property of the Hon. Mr Clifford. The incendiary was seen by a jockey who attempted to seize him, but was stunned by the man who made off. It is believed the same man has caused the late fire in Blenheim. This morning a three-year-old daughter of Mr George Ward, painter, of Masterton, was knocked down by a; runaway horse and cart and killed instantaneously. The Harbour Board has pissed a resolution to borrow £100,000. DUNEDIN, Friday. A house belonging to Mr McLean, of Mussellborough, was burned down last night. It was insured in the Standard Office for £100. A house at Bannockburn, owned and occupied by Mr Parsons, has been destroyed by fire. The insurance was £150 in the Union Office.
