S. S. MARAROA IN A GALE.
LOSS OV LIFE. (By Electric TiiLiiuKAim—Copyright.) Svhney, October!). TllK Mararoa, which left Auckland at 5 p.m. nn October 3, arrived last night. On Sunday, while approaching the coast, sho encountered a tenih'c gale with fearful sea, which continued yesterday. At half-past three in the afternoon she was suddenly struck by an enormous wave of unusual magnitude. The passengers on the hurricane deck wore, lmrlud in all directions. Mrs Henderson and infant child were curried overboard without any chance of heip and drowned. Two other passengers, Mr White and Mr Herbert, each had a leg broken, and Seaman Jones also had his leg fractured. Another child of Mrs Henderson's was fortunately caught by the rail, and hung suspended the.ro till tho vessel righted, when it was rescued. Several other persons received severe bruises. The Herald says: — Mrs Henderson was the wife of Mr Henry Henderson, cabinetmaker, who is a brother of our well-known feliowtownsniau Mr John Henderson, painter, of Wyndhaui-stieet. Mr H. Henderson has been for some years in the employ of Messrs Winks and Hall, but about six months ago migrated to Victutiu, where lie found employment in Ballarat. His wife and children, accompanied by the former's sister, Mrs (.i. A. Hmidley, were ou their way to j.iin him when the fatality occurred. Mrs Henderson was a daughter of Mr David Frou.in. at present residing in the Surrey Hills. Her children were a boy, aged three, a girl of two years, and an infant in arms, and it was the youngest of them that was swept overboard with its mother.
