HAMILTON BOROUGH COUNCIL
Tin-: usual monthly meeting of the Hamilton Borough Council was held at the Council Chambers at 7.30 on Tuesday iiveriing. There were present : His Worship the Mayor (in the chair), Knox, Salmon, Tippen, Wood, Bell, von Stunner, Jones and I ,, rear. The minutes of the last ordinary meeting, adjourned meeting and a special meeting, were read and confirmed. Cr. Jones alone dissenting. Transfer. —Mr H. Metcalfe requested that liot. 372, Hamilton West, bo transferred to Mr G. W. Sure. The request was granh-cl. Vincent's Drain , .—Another letter was received from Mr Vincent, asking that something be done iu the matter at once, as he would not put up with tho nuisance any longer.—Cr. Jones moved that legal opinion be taken from counsel in Auckland on this matter.—Seconded by Cr. Knox pro forma. —Cr. Wood moved as au amendment that no further legal advice be applied for on this matter.—Seconded by Cr. Frear. —On the amendment being put, the voting was : —For: Crs. Wood, Frear and Knox; against : The Mayor, Crs. Tippen, Salmon, Bell, Jones and von Stunner. The amendment was declared lost.—On the motion being put, the voting was vice versa, and it was therefore declared carried.—Cr. von Stunner moved that a committee consisting of Ois. von Stunner, Knox, Tippen, Jones, and the Mayor be appointed to consult with Mr L. O'Neill, with a view to his preparing a statement and obtaining counsel's opinion on the borough's liability in the matter of Vincent's drain.—Seconded by Cr. Bell and carried. Ulster-street.—The Forennn of Works was instructed to have the works done in this street as recommended by him. Work.— J. Devitt and G. Mayes applied for employment on the borough works. The applications were received. Works Rkpout,— The Foreman of Works reported that during the month a V gate had been erected at the Like Reserve, a bis gate at the saleyards had also been erected, McSweeney's footpath had been formed, and other minor jobs done. The report was received. Sai.kyards Drain.—Tho Foreman of Works reported that the drain from the saleyards on the opposite side of Victoriastreet had fallen in, and he recommended that pipes be put in. It was resolved that the work be done as recommended under tho supervision of the Chairman of the Works Committee. Poundkeepek's Report.—The Poundkeeper reported that during the month there had been 3G cattle and 40 sheep impounded, and that he had received the following fees, £2 0s 10d ; commonage fees, i)s 2d ; total, £2 lOd. The report was received and adopted. Lease.—The Clerk reported that part of lot U2, Hamilton West, about :J-acre, had been leased to Mr R. Williamson at the upset price, viz., £1 per annum.—The report was adopted. Labourer.—Cr. Jones moved that C. McKeuzie be informed that his services be no longer required after November Bth, 1888.—Seconded by Cr. Bell and carried. Cr. Frear moved that any small jobs that could be specified be let by tender.— Seconded by Cr. Jones.—Lost on the Committees. —The following committees were appointed :—Works Committee : The whole Council, five to form a quorum. Finance Committee: The Mayor, Crs. Tippen, Jones and Knox. Legal Committee : Crs. Von Stunner, Knox and Tippen, Cr. Von Stunner to be chairman. Baths C mimittee : The Mayor, Crs. Salmon, Missen, Von Sturmer and Tippen. Presentation. —His Worship then left the room, at the request of the Council, and Cr. Jones was voted to the chair. Cr. Knox moved that Crs. Von Scunner, Jones and the mover be a committee to report as to a suitable presentation to be made to the Mayoress in commemoration of hei delivery of a son during the term of her husband's mayorality.—Seconded by Cr. Von Stunner and carried. Valuation.—Cr. Knox moved that the romuneiMtion of valuer for the Buiomih bo £10.—Seconded by Cr. Frear.—Cr. Jones moved, as au amendment, that th # e remuneration be £15.—The amendment was lost, ami the original motion carried.—lt was resolved to call for applications, to be in by next, meeting. Any candidates canvassing councillors will bo. disqualified. Library Committee.—Cr. Tippen was added to the Library Committee, vice Cr. Sandes. Payments.—The following accounts were passed fir pavment, Cr. Von Sturmer alone dissenting:— Lees, £1 ss; Pearson, £1 10s lid ; Carder Bros., £8 lls: G. Mason, £2 10d; The Waikato Times, £3 7s (id; Peacock, 14s 3d ; Kelly, £2 10s ; Jones, £7 Is lid ; Waite, £2 2s Gd. This copcluded the business,
