The Waikato Times AND THAMES VALLEY GAZETTE.

THURSDAY, OCT. 11, 1888.

Equal and exactu justice to all men, Of whatsoever state or persuasion, religious or political.

Sixck writing in our last issue on the subject of frozen meat exports from the Auckland province, ;ind the Waikato in particular, we have received an interesting letter from the manager of the New Zealand Frozen Meat and Storage Company, enclosing at the same time a copy of the circular which has boon issued to the farmers and stock-owners in the provincial district, inducing them to support the Company in obtaining shipments for the direct steamers. The circular points out that, stimulated by tliP great improvements existing in the trade in England. Southern growers are making a strong effort to secure every available space in the steamers for their freights for the next twelve months. Unless, therefore, as we said before, the Waikato stock-owners show some alacrity in supplementing the action of the Frozen Meat Company by guaranteeing stock sufficient to enconr.ge the shipping companies to place steamers on the Auckland berth, they will find the. whole export trade in this valuable and important staple fall entirely into the hands of the Southerners It is through the promises of stock made by some of the large agricultural associations in the district that the Company has H>een enabled to make arrangements for the Tainui taking a shipment from Auckland in January next. But this makes provision for only one solitary shipment in the whole of the ensuing year, whereas one or more of tli3 large steamers vill bo leaving some southern port every month with comple'e cargoes of meat. It is not to bo supposed that the Land Associations alone will meet the necessary requirements for shipping monthly freights from this province. On the other hand, should the majority of the stock-owners of the Waikito and co-terminous districts be infused with the proper spirit to look after their own interests, there should be no insuperable difficulty in establishing a regular trade during the year ISB9, during which period tho frozen meat market in England is reasonably expected to maintain its prosent excellent tone. The plain issues rest with the stock-owners themselves, and they must, surely, recognise the fact that eveu so much as one year's energetic participation with a staple commodity in the British market, under conditions so favourable as those now presenting themselves, will have an immonso influence on the prosperity of the country in which it will bo their individual good fortune to share. Tho go-a-head, self-reliant spirit of the South is needed to a very great degree in tho North. It ha? been said that the rates and charges of tho Frozen Meat and Storage Company are excessive ; that is, they charge one halfpenny for freezing to the threeeighths of a penny charged by the "Wellington Export Company. Those who make this complaint are oblivious to the important fact that the latter company possess the immense advantage of permanent guarantees from producers, which, enable them to keep up their operations all the year through. Therefore, they can afford to freeze for lower rates. Tho Auckland Company, on the other hand, have managed to secure so far guarantees only for one single shipment, to provide for which they must incur expenses, that under similar auspices to those that favour the Southern company could be spread over the whole twelve months. If the growers will undertake to furnish stock for regular monthly shipments during the year, naturally the Freezing Company would then be in a better position to work on a lower scale of charges. Under the terms now oHerod by the Co'npany, stock will be placed in their hands unreservedly for shipment, delivery being taken at Otahuliii. and they will dispose of all rejected cattle and sheep, the hides, skins and fat, to the best advantage for the owners, the Company retaining the olTul for themselves. The Company will slaughter the stock, weigh, freeze, label, bag, and place the carcases at the ship's side, their charges being as follows:— Freight on mutton and beef not to exceed one penny half-penny per lb,, with ten per cent, primage. Lambs will be charged sixpence extra. The rate for freezing will

be, as iiliC-uly stated, one halfpenny per lb., ; bagging, one shilling .mil sixpence per quarter for cattle, mid fourpence for .sluiop. In addition there will b<! insunuiee ai current rates. Deducting these expenses from the proceeds of the, carcases in the English markets, and of the hides, skins and f:it disposed of here, I ho (ivpi-iige not return for an SOOlb. Iml lock, at IAcI per lb., would be over ,£rt, and for a 751b. sheep, at 3d pei , n<., nearly .£1 per head. These, proceeds should be, in every wiiv, highly .satisfactory to the producers.
