TE AROHA

Removal of Battery.—Messrs J, M. Murray and J. Devey are busily engaged in dismantling the battery lately purchased by Mr Kersey Cooper, for removal to Waihi. Domain Board.—The monthly meeting of the Board was held in the office on Saturday, the flth. Present: Messrs Gavin, (chairman), Lipsey, Ahier and Ilott. Correspondence : Letter received from the town clerk of Auckland, acknowledging receipt of samples of sulphur despatched by the Board. Application for extension of time from Messrs Campbell and Cook, contractors for the new lawn court, on account of the unexpected difficulties they had met with in meeting with such a quantity of timber and debris delaying the progress of the work. The Board were of the opinion that tho men had worked well, and were uot to blamo for not finishing within the specified time. On tho motion of Mr Ahier, it was resolved to leave • the matter in the hands of the chairman. A second letter was received from the same parties asking an advance on the contract for current expenses. The members thought it wjuld be unwise to make any advance, but were willing to allow orders to be given upon the Board. —Mr Lipsey proposed and Mr Ahier seconded that the contractors be permitted to give orders, the same to be submitted to the Chairman for approval. Carried. Medical Officer: This question provoked considerable discussion. Mr Lipsey : " If the Board think it wise and judicious* for the benefit of visitors and in the interests of the place I think we should do what we believe |to be right, without referring to the Government." —Mr Ahier: " I believe that through the curative properties of the springs our district is too healthy to support a first-class man. Still I have no objection to giving a portion of tho funds as subsidy, and suggest a limit, say £50."—The Chairman : " We have worried the Government with letters and telegrams, so that now they do not consider them worthy a reply. In any case the matter should be first started by the residents ; and then I would be in favour of the Board supplementing what subsidy they might give." The matter was then deferred for consideration at the next meeting of the Board, Library Building: Mr Ahier moved that theJJuJH consider the advisability of Public Library by erecting a building* in the Domain, as it would be an attraction and also be better patronised than it is now. The present committee find they are unable to carry on from lack of funds, but if they had a building, rent free, the increase of visitors would do the rest. —The Clerk was instructed to ask Mr Pavitt for a rough plan and estimated cost of a building, and call a special meeting at an early date to cansider the matter further.—Advertisement : Mr Armit, who was present, asked the Board to advertise in the Thames-Te Aroha Directory, which he was getting up. —The Board consented to-take au inside page at a cost of 30s. Improvements to Baths Nos. 3 and 5 : The Chairman stated ho had not yok received the plans from the surveyor, but understood they were ready, and he hoped to have them in time for the special meeting.—Accounts: Accounts to the amount of £22 were passed for payment, leaving the Board a credit balance of £72.— Congratulations: The members expressed their pleasure at seeing Mr Lipsoy convalescent, and among them again.
