FOOTBALL.
The Football Season of 1888 in Waikato. [By Wist.man'. I The season which closed on Saturday was ono (if the beat that Waikato has had for some years back, both as regards the number of matches played and tho maiked improvements in the play itself. This season saw five clubs in Waikato and fourteen matches played, the greatest number being played by the Hamilton Uub (9), and the fewest by Huntly and Te Awamutu (4 each.) Hamilton, HimHy and Cambridge were the only clubs plavmp in Waikato in 1887, but this year the Te Awatnutu Club was resuscitated and a new club formed at Ohaupo. The latter has not a very good record, but I hope they will not he discouraged by the result of the matches played this season. Below is the position of the vrtrions clubs, the one having won the greater number of games being taken as first Hamilton'.—All blue. Games played, 0 ; won, 5 ; lost, 2; drawn, 2 ; points scored, 17 against 8. Huntly.- Maroon. Gaines played, 4, won, 3 ; lost, 1; points scored, 8 against Te Awamutu. —Maroon. Games played, 4 ; won, 1; lost, 1; drawn, 2; points scored, 2 against 4. . Cambuidge. — Bine jerseys, white knickerbockers. Games played, 5 ; won, 2 ; lost, 2 • drawn, 1; points scored, 2 against t. OHAUro.—Blue and white. Games played, G; won, 0; lost, 4; drawn, 2; points scored, 4 against 9. The Huntly team have played thii! matches against Hamilton, and one against Cambridge, the return with the latter club not having been played. This club has not met either the Te Awamutu or Ohaupo clubs this season, or doubtless its record .would have been better. The Hamilton club did not play any return with le Awamutu, owing to the difficulty in getting to the latter place. One point which may be noticed here in that there has been very few accidents this season, only two of any note having occurred, viz., Mr W. Cowley hurt in the Te Awamutu-Haimlton match, and Mr 0. Smith in the 3rd Huntly-Hnm-ilton match. In 1887 efforts were made to form a football association in Waikato, and I think that one might well be formed next season, so as to fix the club matches and to put a stop to such exhibitions as that of Saturday last, by striking the offendersnames off the club lists. In pant seasons there used to be a number of ladies come to witness the various football matches, but such is not the case now. owing to the behaviour and language of some of the players.
