THE ARGOSIES OF FATE.
'Twere well for us, in simple trust relying, To wait with calm the argosies of fate, Kegardless tho' the precious moments fly-
ing May brins her tardy treasures all teo late, 'Twere well to stand amidst this vast
dominion, With faces lifted to the silent sky, Nor fear the striking of Time's mighty
pinion Will mar or maim us as it passes by.
To stand beneath the shining spaco of
heaven When all its blue is blotted out by night, Knowing the hour is near for stars to
quicken And stream their radiance on our clouded
sight. To wait in patience 'mid the stubbled fur
rows, Where lie the husks forsaken of the grain, Remembering that the buried seed is 'neath
them To crown the field with harvest once again.
And wherefore thus, with faces up to
heaven Drown we that vision with human tears ? The promise there ao wonderfully written Should be enough for all our hopes and
fears. Then let these sighing cease, and vexed am-
bit ion Nature is peacefulness beneath the sun ; Surely that which is fittest finds fruition, And nothing that is beat remains undone. 0, grieve not, tho' the highest of earth's mountains Leaves us so distant from the lifting skies, The tired feet so pitifully climbing Shall rench some goal however far it liea. Nor weary tho' we fall, thro' wings that fail us, From every hard-won eminence of thought; The broken pinion strengthens in tho mending, And peace is dearer thro' the battle foupht. And this the lesson our deeds nnshriven Which rise to daunt us from tho vanished years, That noblest memories are of wrongs forgiven, And wrath divinest that which dies in tears. 'Tia this alone that makes the worth of living, That stills life's tempests be they e'er so wild, And solves us that great problem of existence — The paradox of truth* unreconciled.
