In the French picture gallery is a landscape entitled " Pommiers (apple trees) Ferine Loysel." A middle-aged woman, and a man a few years older, both French, were standing before it a few days ago, when tho woman burst into tears. "You know that place, madame?" said the man stirtled. " Indeed I should, monsieur, fori was born there." "Born there. Is it possible? And your name, madame ?" "It is Rosalie Picard." " Mon Dieu ! daughter of Jean and Marie Picard?'' "The very same." "And have you forgotten your brother Pierre?" A long look, and the woman fell into the man's arms. Twenty years ago he had left home, roamed about tho world, found his way to the goldtields out here, and finally settled down as a vigneron. The sistor had come out in the service of the French consul's wife. And so they met after twenty years. Whether the story be true or not, it is cer- i twpty a one*—Melbourne Gossip. I
