CAMBRIDGE BOROUGH COUNCIL.
Tun above Council met on Tuesday, nt 3 11.111, Present : Tlio Mayor (Mr Hally), Councillors l'riestly, Webber, Clements, Bach, Uillett, J<'ergusson, anil Bund. The minutes of tlie previous meeting were confirmed. Nkw Membkus. —The Clerk reported that the only nominations received for the si>ats vacant by retiring Councillors, were Messrs (Jillett, Webber, and J. Young, who uro therefore elected. Mils Dokk's l'uoi'F.i'TY.—Mr W. Rattray the mortgagee of the house that was lately burned, belonging to .Mrs Dore, wrote asking the Council if they conld compel him him to pay tlie rates, £1 13s, as lie was neither owner nor occupier.—'The Clerk had replied that they could.—Mrs J)oio also wrote asking that the rates be forgiven, as she had been put to about £30 expense Jn raising her house, when the level ot V ic-toria-street was raised. I(j was resolved to excuse tho lates for the year, viz., ' The lloscitai. lUrn.—'The Secretary of theWniknto Hospital Board requested the Council to pay tlie balance of the rate due to tlie Beard as it would be wanted to pay for the buildings now being erected. The account was passed and will be paid as soon as tlie Council's representative says it is wanted, which will probably be about November Ist.
Wokks Committee Rctout.— The report of the Public Works Committee merely gave a list of the works carried out during the month. It was adopted. Finaxck Committkk.—The report of the Finance Committee recommended that Mr G. W. Kusscll's vent be not lowered, as it would form a dangerous precedent; that tho map of Piako County sent by the Commissioner of Crown Lands be mounted and hung in tho'reading room ; and that & O.Jd be paid Mr Riley, it being half the cost of timber used by him in a culvert near his house. The report was adopted. Bathing.—The Council recommended the public to let ladies and children have sole use of the bathing ground from 10 a.m. until 3.30 p.m. for the ensuing six months. The mending of tho road to the baths was referred to the Works Committee with power to act. Rates.—The Mayor suggested that councillors should pay their rates before September 30th, as they could then call upon the ratepayers to pay up, and after the Bank of New Zealand balance day they could commence an attack for the reduction of interest. Town Allotments. —There were only two tenders for the 21 years' lease of live acres of town allotments, viz., H. Gdjett, fjs (id por acre per Annum, and 11, Kirkwood, first tivo years nil, afterwards Tia per ncre per annum. H. Gillett's tender was accepted. Puuuu Hall Flooh.—The timber having been delivered upon the ground, Or. Ferguson was deputed to inspect it, and if correct, givo a certificate, upon which 7~> por cent, of the cost, £10, will be paid. Accounts.—The following accounts were passed, and the Council rose :—C. Cox, £1; 11. Precce, £(>; W. Souter, £13 10s lid ; T. Wells, £3 0s 4d ; G. Weyman, £1 I'm ; J. Hicks, £2 ; P. Murphy, £2 5s ; J. Meredith, £3 12s; W. T. Buckland, 10s ;J. Webber, £1 0s Gd ; J. Sharp, £110s. Total, £37 08 7d.
