LAND FOR KING TAWHIAO
[BV TKMMHAI'H—OWN' UOIIIIKSI'ON'nUNT.] Auckland, Wednesday. Mil K T. Di-fAUiiinterviewed the Minister of Public Works, in connection with certain Native lands. It appeals that there is a strong desire on the part of hapiis ot Ngatirnukau'a tribo, to sot apart !)000 acres of land, the pick of the Uuhepotae block, situated towards T:iupo, for the solo use of the late Maori Kinß, Tawliiao raid hi.s followers. Mv JJufaur has boon instructed by the natives, who number nearly -100, to draw up the necessary deeds, but that gentleman finds, that if ho proceeds to do t.hi«, ho will render himself liable unjer the present law.s dealnp with native lands to a penalty cf several hundred pounds. As it is for the country's good that provision should be made fur Tawhiao and his followers, it would be rather a hardship on the lawyer if he was mulcted in a penalty when he was working for the public g"od, and in a spirit not opposed to the law. He wished the Minister to sec if something could not bo done to have the matter settlnd without incurring tho penalty, and Mr Mitchelson promised to do this.
