Ho put it out and waited till 11, when, thinking all was safe, he went to bed. At about 1 o clock he was aroused by flames, which were in the ceiling over his bed. Mrs Young is absent in Auckland. He woke his three children, got them out, and then endeavoured t» save the furniture, succeeded in removing very little, most of it, including a valuable sewing machine, tools and clothing, being burnt. Only a row-neighbours were aroused, and nothing could bo done to stop the tire, which burned itself out. The sparks ignited the shingles on the roof of Mr Passniore's residence next door, but was put out without difficulty.
