Japanese engineers propose to adopt a system of earthwork defences protected lay an iron shield one foot in thickness, and extending twenty-five feet each side of the gun. An American journal says " Pascal I'ortur, the boy preiuher, who lias been astonishing congregations in Indiana and Kentucky by his learned and eloquent semons, is only 14 years old and dresses iu knickerbockers ; a plaited blouse, a jaunty little hat and high button shoej complete his attire. In many respects he looks like an ordinary schoolboy."
