NEWSPAPER SLANDERS.
[by telegraph— press association.] Gisborn'e, Wednesday. The jury found a verdict of "guilty" against John Baldwin for libel (three counts), and the accused was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. The case against Flora Baldwin has been withdrawn. The Chief Justice alluded strongly to a man placing his wife in a position where she could be put in the dock for a libel committed by himself. His Honour said those who bought the paper were worse than the prisoner who made a living by retailing the slanders.
