The Republicans in the American Senate propose to reduce the sugar duty one-half and increase the wool duty. Mr Hare, Mayor of Surbition in JSun'cy, was shot dead by liis son, recently returned from Australia, who also committed suicidjß, The Chinese Government, refuse to ratify the treaty with America excluding Chinese. The Australians were defeated by All England by one. innings and 21 runs. The English bowling and fielding were superb. The Portugese troops in Delagoa Bay have mutinied. Marines have been landed to restore order. Great Britain agrees not to impose differential duties in favour of sugar imported from the colonies. The sugar bounty agreement will come into operation in September, 1891, when raw and refined sugar, molasses, and glucose from the bounty countries will be excluded by the signatory Powers. The agreement will be ratified in August, 1890. The British Colonial Antibounty Society cordially approves of the agreement, but regrets the delay in bringing the treaty into operation. September 2. The Wesleyan Conference has issued a pastoral address, which the English Press generally regard as a striking sign of advancement in the direction of religious liberalism. The members of the Wesleyan faith are urged to take a more active part in public afl'airs, on the ground that stalwart Christians are painfully needed on Education Boards, Municipal Bodies, and above all in Parliament. The colonies will be permitted to retire separately from the Sugar Bounties Convention, subject to the condition of giving twelve months' notice. Obituary: Sir Samuel Rowo, Governor of the Gold Coast. Capetown, September 2. The Portugese mutiny at Delagoa Bay was quelled without bloodshed. Paris, August 30. France retains the option of signing the Sugar Bounties Convention within six months. The Emperor William visits Rome on October 6. Hamburg, September 2. It is estimated the damage done by the recent fire, will amount to five millions. Risks were held by English Insurance Offices to the extent of one million.
