RAGLAN.
Elkction Itkms.— Saturday last being the day fixed for the nomination of candidates for the office of councillors for the ICarioi Riding (two members were required), no less than six gentlemen being nominated for the office, viz., Messrs J. K. McDonald, T. Mitchell, C. Sutton, W. Thompson, Langley, and T. Wilsou. All have been promised a large measure of support from their various friends, and already very keen interest is being shown in the coming struggle, the election being fixed for the 19th inst. The very air is full of " wars and rumours of wars " and County elections are the shop talk of the day. And alas that it should be said, the running is still over tho old ground of roads here or roads there, and not in the interest of the whole County at large. However, let us hope that the best men will head the poll. All the candidates are " good men and true " in the opinion of their supporters, and certainly are representatives of the opinion of each section of the community holding the same.
Farsi Operations.—Farm operations are now being pushed on with vigour, oats for hay, potatoes, etc., are being planted over a good breadth of land, the natives being very industrious this spring. Peaches and other fruit trees are in full blooin, a large number of treos having been planted of all sorts this season. What is wanted is good roads into the district and then very soon the settlement would progress. Recently, three gentlemen having nearly £10,000 between them, and wishing to buy land in this district, sent one of their number to examine and report upon the locality. Whilst being perfectly satisfied with the land, &c., the bad roads into the place was the cause of their not nettling here.
Road Grants.—However, it is pleasing to note that in spite of these hard times, the House has granted £11,000, it is said, for road work in this County upon various roads, all still requiring a much larger sum to make them anything like fit for much traffic in the winter time.
Property-tax Valuation.—Mr J. K. McDonald has been appointed assessor fnr this purpose for the Raglan County. He is busily engaged in valuing the various properties in this district. Wkathkk.—Real spring weather now prevails]during the last two days. Nature's face has changed from storm to sunshine, and everything looks beautiful around us, trees blooming, grass and vegetation rapidly springing up.
