The South Island, particularly the Canterbury province, has been thrown into a state of great excitement by the violent shocks ot' earthquake which took place there on Saturday morning, since followed at intervals by others. Great damage has been done to buildings over a wide area of country, and something like a panic has taken hold of the inhabitants in the neighbourhood of the visitation. From the accounts to hand of the nature and motions of the phenomena we are inclined to agree with the opinion of Mr Gunn, who has walked across the Hanmer Plains, which appears to be nearest to the centre of the disturbance, that a volcanic eruption has occurred in the ranges contiguous to that locality. No doubt exploring parties will be despatched to the scene of action and their investigations will decide the point.
