CHRISTIANITY IN JAPAN.
English Secularists should go to Japan and get wisdom (aaid the London Court Journal). While they are trying to crush religion out of our public elementary schools, as the first step toward abolishing it from the life of the nation, the wisest heads in Japan are coming to the conclusion that that country cannot get on satisfactorily without religion, and that of all religious Christianity is the best. The land of the Mikado has parted from its old, native, heathen ways, without having as yet definitely adopted any western substitute; and a very interesting discussion is now being carried on by " several eminent publicists " respecting the adviseableness of the Rdoption of tho Christian religion by the Japanese nation The grounds on which this step is advocated in some cases are exceedingly mundane—not to say mercenary. They may be roughly summed up in the phrase that Christianity pays better than any other religion.
