THE RAILWAY RETURNS.
The traffic returns for the four weeks end ing 21st. July last, and for the corresponding period last year, furnish the following information. On the Auckland section, the total number of passengers were 22,555 and 24,706 respectively, showing a decrease of 1,821. Parcels, &c., were 3,514 and 3,015. Drays and live Btock, 4,0(56 and 4,161 being a large increase. Goods and merchandise, 9,919 tons against 10,437 or a decrease of 518 tons. The receipt for thu two periods were respectively, £7,49S and £7,522. The total returns fr.mi the colony for the year up to the above date are, 1888-!), revenue, ±1310,374 ; and for 1887-8, £325,941, a deficiency of £15,567 for the three months. The expenditure was £201,. r >!)l and £221,809, being a reduction of £20,418 or a little mote than 3 per ceut. over last year. The passenger traffic over all sections shows a decline of 181,991.
