LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
(l!Y THLECJRAI'II. — L'EIiSS ASSOCIATION.) Tmk Council met. at 2.30. The Native Affairs Committee reported that tliey had examined the Native Bills, and recommended they lie proceeded with. Oil the motion of Sir F. Whitaker, it was agreed to commit, them at 7.30. Sir F. Whitaker moved that the Standing Orders be so far suspended for the remainder of the session, as to enable Bills <• pass through all their stages at one sitting. The Council divided: Ayes, 12; noes, 12. The Speaker voted against the motion, which was lost. After several Bills had been dealt with, the following were committed and passed : — Crown and Native Lunls Rating Act Repeal Bill, Local Bodies Audit Bill, and Government Life Insurance Bill. Progress was reported on the Rating Acta Amendment Bill, and the Council adjourned at *1.40. The Council resumed at 7.30, The New P.ymouth Harbour Bill was read a first time. The Council went into committee on the four Native Bills. The first considered was the Native Land. A verbal amendment was agreed to in clause 2, confirming the privileges conferred on any person having the slightest tinge of Maori blood. Clause 5, relating to the removal of restrictions, was struck out, as recommended by the Native Affairs Committee. A new clause, giving the Governor power to remove restrictions on alienation, was agreed to, A new clause was added, to the effect that the Act shall not apply to any lands under the management or control of the Public Trustee. The Bill was then reported with amendments.
