FISHERIES TREATY.
REJECTED BY Tlfli SENATE. GREAT EXCITEMENT. [nv ki.ixtric Tui.mui'ii. -coi'viimu r.] Washington, August 22. Great excitement prevailed in the Henute, when it was iiiinounoecl that the Fisheries Treaty was rejected by a majority of three. Senator Morgan, in a speech delivered immediately after the division was known, said that if England had acted towards the. United States in a similar manner, the latter power would have taken it as a direct challenge of war. it is expected that further trouble will arise between Canada and the United States in consequence of the rejection of the treaty, and a section of the press adopt a warlike tone. Mr Bayard, Secretary of State, professes not to be disappointed at the rejection of the Fisheries Treaty, and says that America will now revert to the treaty of 1818, as the modus vivendi. August 23. 'I he rejection of the Fisheries Treaty causes little excitement in the United States and Canada, as it is believed the modus vivendi will be continued.
