VOLCANIC ERUPTION.
A TOWN SPLIT IN TWO. (BY KLECTIUO TKLBUKAIMI.—COI'YUMJIIT). Thursday Island, August 22. Details are to hand concerning ;i terrible eruption in Japan. The Island of IJien Tig Yun, a hundred square miles in extent was thr scone of visitation, which took place on July M, The shock was most violent and almost paralysed the inhabitants who numbered about 3,000. The town was virtually split into two by the upheaval and a large number of terror-stricken inhabitants were swallowed up in the" chasm caused by the eruption. Many of the people rushed to the foot of the mountain, and were killed by falling lava and boulders. Nearly all the houses on the. island were destroyed and most of the. residents killed. The eruption lasted from morning till dark, and fires sprang out from the crater, and it was in the panic that ensued that most of the lives were lost. The mountain virtually fell on the town, burying a large number, and many who escaped were subsequently starved to death.
