OHINEMURI.
♦— • Tub Melbourne Exhibition.—The topic of the day "at the corner" is tho unfortunate absence of anything like a fair oxhibit of local ores and other niattors pertaining to the mining industry at the Melbourne Exhibition. The matter has however been taken in hand by our County Chairman and some others who have issued circulars to all those interested, calling a meeting at tho Council Chambers, Paeron, for next Saturday, when the matter will be fully canvassed. It is proposed to send from each mine in the district a bulk sample of about one ton of ore to be sent packed in neat boxes of uniform size and shape, as early as possible to the Exhibition. The Government will frank the ore from the mine to Melbourne. Sale op Orb in England.—The ore taken Home about six months ago by Mr Edward Kersey Cooper, the promoter of the Jubilee mine at Waitekauri, did not realise so much as was at first expected, but it must be admitted realised a price which, compared with other ores, is extremely satisfactory. Tho prices were as follows :— Lot 1, about six cwt. picked ore. Assay value, 220z. ldwt. gold ; 440z. 13dwts. silver, realised nett £80 10s per ton. Lot 2, about four tons. Assay value, Boz. gold, Sdwts. silver, realised nett £30 per ton. Lot 3, about six tons. Assay value. 3oz. gold, 6oz. 3dwt. silver, realised nett £7 12s per ton. this shows of what sort of stuff Waitekauri is made. It can be assorted without hesitation that there is nothing in this field that can touch this district for rich ore. Mining Activity.—Mr Cooper is now hard at work over preliminaries. He spends £2,000 immediately in making arrangements for plant, etc, and has carte blanche as to the amount he may draw. To give some notion ot the rich dirt from this district (Waitekauri.) I quote from Warden Northcroft's report to Parliament, the following returns from small samples by the battery process. A halt ton from the Eclipse (now the Saxon), crushed for oz and a half ton young New Zealand There are other small samples mentioned as good. The total quantity treated for the year by the rude battery system was 117<ii tons for 4200z. gold. Had anything like science in the matter of treatment been brought to bear, three times this return could have been realised. Messrs J. W. Walker and Parkes, at Waihi and Karangnhake, respectively, are wiring in. Mr Walker will commence treatment next month, and Mr Parkes probably sooner. It is stated that a Parkes furnace will be erected at Paerna. Prom the other centres there is little new. Storms.—A very heavy storm passed »ver Ohinemuri on Thursday and Friday last, doing some damage.
